Inorganic phosphates - ortho-phosphates, poly-phosphates, pyro-phosphates - are used to control corrosion in cooling water systems. Poly-phosphates and pyro-phosphates have a tendency to revert to ortho-phosphates that reacts with the hardness present in water to form a scale or sludge.
High efficiency polymers are required to stabilize these so that their corrosion inhibiting properties are made use of without the problem of scale formation and fouling.
