Chelant Based

Chelant Based programs - as the name suggests - chelate the hardness salts and keep them in solution rather than precipitating them. Typically, these are based on EDTA or NTA.
Phosphonates can substitute these fully or partially to reduce the corrosivity associated with these programs - a) phosphonates have higher chelation values so lower dosages are needed, and b) in case of breakdown of the phosphonate molecule, ortho phosphate is generated that precipitates the hardness rather than causing a scale to form.

Chelant based programs use polymers to disperse the corrosion products and small quantities of precipitates formed in the system.
